Cream tea's sold at a popular cafe in Llandudno will help the homeless in the town.
Badger's cafe in the Victoria Centre has joined the Weekly News's Helping Hand campaign.
During the next year 50p from every cream tea sold will be split between Hope Restored and the RNLI in Llandudno. The money will be a huge boost to Hope Restored, which is a drop-in centre in the town for the homeless.
The centre in Gloddaeth Street feeds around 14 homeless people 3 days a week, and they give out emergency food parcels when needed.
Tan Lan bakery, based in Llanrwst, with shops in Conwy and Rhos-on-Sea, recently raised £100 for the charity by donating 5p per mince pie sold.
At present because of the cold weather, Hope Restored is also asking people to donate any unwanted clothing, blankets, tents and sleeping bags as the charity is facing a crisis because of the cold weather.
Brenda Hewitt said: “It's a rough winter for the homeless at the moment, we have two guys living up in the caves on the Great Orme. They've put a tent up in one of the caves, but when they come and see me they are covered in soot as they've been trying to light fires to keep warm. A massive thanks goes to Pippa at Badgers who is going to donate this money to Hope Restored. I urge people to go and enjoy a cream tea at Badgers.”
She added: “We aren't getting many food donations any more so would be very grateful if people could drop them at local churches and the Weekly News offices. We need to keep the Helping Hands campaign going as much as we can, as there is a greater need than ever. I dread to think what's going to happen in April when the changes in benefits kicks in.”
A cream tea at Badgers costs £3.95, this includes a homemade scone and a pot of tea.
Pippa Leach, the manager of Badgers, explained why she wanted to get involved. She said: “I've known Brenda for years and I know how much effort she puts into Hope Restored, she works so hard for her guys, as she calls them. People can help by doing so many simple things like donating a few cans of food, or giving them that coat that has been in the back of the wardrobe for years! We've decided to run this campaign for Hope Restored and the Llandudno RNLI for a year so we should raise quite a lot of money for the charities.”
** UPDATE **
Sadly, since running this promotion, Badgers has ceased trading. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all their members of staff for their amazing support and you will be sorely missed.
